Sleep. Get more of it.

And not just the ‘fell asleep after four glasses of merlot and a curry’ type sleep, but proper, good quality sleep.

Good quality sleep makes us more alert, less anxious, improves our cognitive function and even reduces the risk of strokes, heart attacks and diabetes.

And did you know that sleep deprivation is so harmful to humans that the Guinness Book of Records now refuses to recognize new attempts to break the sleep deprivation world record?

So why is it so important to get our 7-9 hours of ZZZs each night?

Well the body does most of its repairing when we’re asleep. One of the ways it does this is by using a process called autophagy - which literally means ‘self-eating’. Special cells called microphages go hunting for bits of old, used-up, dead or diseased cells which they can either recycle to make new cells or excrete from the body. In short, autophagy helps us get rid of toxins and slow the aging process.

But what are the things you can do to improve your quality of sleep and therefore optimize how well this process works?

Lots of things.

Ok, let’s be specific. One easy and effective thing you can do when you go to bed tonight is simply this: switch off your broadband router.

I can practically hear the gasps of horror echoing across the country, but hear me out.

As well as being chemical and biological beings, we humans are also electrical systems. And things like Wi-Fi, mobile phone radiation, and electromagnetic fields from electrical appliances can impact the body, disrupting sleep patterns.

You may have heard of the cress experiment carried out by a class of ninth grade schoolgirls in Denmark who were struggling to concentrate on lessons? The cress seeds they grew in a room without Wi-Fi was just fine, but the cress seeds grown in a room with two Wi-Fi routers was, well, a lot less fine – it didn’t grow at all.

Perhaps try it for a week and see if you notice the difference in your quality of sleep: when you go to bed, switch your broadband router and any electrical appliances in your bedroom off at the plug, and switch your mobile phone onto airplane mode. Sweet dreams!

What Beliefs are Running Your Life?

Romantic relationships can be a source of incredible joy and excitement in our lives, but what happens when conflict arises in relationships and life isn’t all roses and champagne?

From little lovers’ tiffs to fully blown world-war-three-style arguments, here’s something interesting I’ve learnt about having disagreements with your significant other (or anyone else for that matter):

It’s not you, it’s me.

What do I mean by that? Well, as much as it seems like it’s our partner’s behaviour that causes us to get angry, upset, or downright murderous, sometimes it isn’t actually their behaviour that causes us to have this response; it’s what their behaviour causes us to believe about ourselves.

Now, we all have beliefs about ourselves that we carry round with us, and they largely determine how we feel, what we think, and ultimately how we act. And whilst we are often all too aware of the things we say and do, and how we behave, what we aren’t always aware of is what the beliefs are that are driving that behaviour, because they are rooted deep in our subconscious.

The beliefs we have about ourselves have been programmed into us throughout our lives from a very early age – mostly by other people. They can come from parents, siblings, teachers, friends - anyone. They can be negative ones such as ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I always mess things up’, or ‘I’m bad with money’, or seemingly positive ones like ‘I am a good girl’, ‘I don’t cause a fuss’ or ‘I am a high achiever’.

So when we find ourselves getting angry or upset at our partner, it can often be because they have done or said something that triggers a deeply-held belief of ours, either reinforcing a belief that we find painful, or perhaps challenging a belief that we find comfortable. For example, when your spouse leaves the kitchen in a mess for the hundredth time, and you feel your hackles rising, perhaps it has triggered a belief around ‘I am not valued’ or ‘I don’t deserve nice things’.

So why is this a good thing? Well, if it is our beliefs that cause us to react in a way that we don’t like, we can choose to change them. Beliefs are not set in stone, and coaching helps to identify and address any beliefs that are no longer serving you.
